Thomas Esau first discovered photography as a teenager, but after a long break, he returned when he realised he had stopped truly noticing the world around him.
He was walking familiar routes without really seeing them. Photography gave him a reason to slow down, look more closely and pay attention again.
He rediscovered the craft through film photography. The slower process encouraged him to pause, study the light and consider each image before pressing the shutter. This way of looking still shapes his work today.
Thomas photographs streets, buildings, landscapes and everyday life. He is especially drawn to light and shadow, and to authentic moments when people are simply being themselves.
Based in Frankfurt, he regularly spends time on Turkey’s Aegean coast, where he has close family ties.
He also created Photography Cards, a digital product that helps photographers develop their eye and improve their technique through guided practice and coaching.
